Alexis Heeb (1973-2017) came up to Lincoln in 1998 to read for a DPhil in Politics, in which he studied violent crime, its perception, and public policy response in Colombia.

Alexis devoted his professional career to humanitarian assistance, including through the International Committee of the Red Cross, which he served for 12 years until his untimely death after a valiant battle against cancer.

Throughout his life he was guided by a deep sense of justice, and nourished by a keen interest in jazz, nature and all things British.

Alexis made many friends at Lincoln and we now wish to honour his memory by offering financial support to undergraduate and graduate students at Lincoln College who, like Alexis, carry out academic research.

Lincoln College has established an endowed fund, named the Alexis Heeb Research Scholarship Fund with the goal to raise GBP 50,000 initially, which will be invested with Lincoln’s endowment, and the income drawn from the capital will be used to fund up to three project grants each year for students enrolled in either undergraduate or graduate studies at Lincoln College.

The College will invite students to apply for the Scholarship, which will be awarded on a competitive basis (academic merit), subject to the following application criteria :

- The Scholarship is to cover expenses related to the student’s participation in an academic conference (ideally with contribution of an abstract, poster, paper) or relevant training event, or publication of a research paper in a peer-reviewed journal.

- In certain exceptional situations, the Scholarship will also cover the cost of reagents, equipment or materials required to perform a planned research project.

- Preference will be given to students in the fields of Politics and Cancer Research (Clinical and Basic).

In years when applications do not meet a minimal standard, the Scholarship will not be awarded.

A Board of three members representing Lincoln College, the initiators of the Bursary/Fund, and an academic representative within the Fellowship of the College will have oversight of the Fund and will recommend recipients of the Scholarship annually to the Governing Body of Lincoln College, which will make the final decision.

Applicants will be expected to provide a one-page description of the project to be considered by the Board, along with supporting material, including an academic reference.
